1) The amount of energy should be the same even though the order of processes is different. Assuming the same efficiency of work to heat and heat to work, then it would have to be the same net work created.

 

2) A Carnot cycle differs from our 4 step process in that the order is isothermal expansion, adiabatic expansion, isothermal compression, and then adiabatic compression. This allows for 100% conversion of heat to work AND vice versa. The sign chart looks like this-

The difference in signs are due to the adiabatic processes that occur.
