First, I set up for the lab:

I got three identical bowls and filled them with 1/2 cup each of the liquids. Then, I set up my laptop, connected it to the Vernier interface, and loaded Logger Pro. I labeled the temperature probes 1 and 2 so I wouldn't get confused.

After that, I made sure that the device was being recognized on my computer.

Running the experiment/ data collection:

After that, the lab was super simple! I just microwaved all the liquids, made sure they were around the right temperature (I had to redo the water three times before I got it to around 50 degrees) and then put the temperature probe in and hit the "collect" button. Because I had set up the data collection to be automatically every thirty seconds, I didn't have to watch the experiment while it collected data.

Submerging the temperature probe:

Data collection. It even drew the graph for me! (The red is the cooling liquid, and the blue is room temperature.

The only snag I hit during data collection was that I didn't realize the oil was way too hot - over 90 degrees Celsius at first! :( - and I didn't have any more, so I just had to wait about 20 minutes for it to cool to a reasonable, around 50 degree temperature.

After about 7 minutes, it was still 74 degrees:

 Oops.

Data analysis:

The analysis was simple as well. I just entered all the data points into a spreadsheet at school, and then plugged in the formula to calculate k. More on that in the "Wrapping it up" section of my portfolio.

Here's the spreadsheet for salt water:
